Author portraits - the Warhol case


In a few days, the Supreme Court of the United States will make a final decision on whether or not the accusation of copyright infringement by Andy Warhol regarding the iconic portrait of Pince taken by Goldsmith in 1981 has validity. The portrait was chromatically altered and used by Warhol for 'the article Purple Fame the Prince series. After a series of accusations between the Warhol Foundation and Goldsmith, the latter challenged the copyright infringement lawsuit in 2021. The case's conclusion is relevant to the entire art system. It could be a crucial point in the history of appropriation and related rights involving still living artists.
